Jahnu Saptami

Jahnu-saptami appears in the month of Vaisakha on the 7th day of Sukla-paksa, or the waxing fortnight of the full moon. When Vamanadeva kicked a hole in the universal shell with His toe, causing a few drops of water from the spiritual world to leak into the universe, this water flowed into the universe and became known as the Ganges River. The Ganges river is thus considered sacred because it originated from the spiritual world and because it touched the toe of Vamanadeva.

Originally, the Ganges flowed only in the heavenly planets. Ganges descended to the Earth on the Akshaya tritiya day to deliver the cursed souls of Bhagiratha’s ancestors. While on her way to the kingdom of Bhagiratha, her mighty flow and gushing turbulent
water destroyed the Ashram of sage Jahnu. This angered the sage Jahnu and he drank up all of Ganges water. Upon this, Bhagiratha prayed to the Rishi Jahnu to release the Ganges so that she could proceed on her mission. Pleased with his prayers, Jahnu released Ganges from his ear. Jahnu Rishi released the Ganges from his ear on the Saptami of Vaishakha Shukla Paksha, known as Jahnu Saptami. One of the nine islands of Navadvipa is called Jahnudvipa. It was here that Jahnu Muni performed austerities. The Ganges is also known as Jahnavi, the daughter of Jahnu Rishi.

Afterwards, Ganges descended to Rasatala, liberating the sixty thousand sons of Sagara. On the Jahnu Saptami day the Ganges is worshipped and many people make offerings to the forefathers, and bathe in the Ganges.
